When is a law not a law?

For reasons I don't quite follow, we've been getting mailers from motivational seminars that focus on the Law of Attraction, the silly idea that one's wants/desires/thoughts have decisive influence on how the universe behaves.
Like any con that spreads widely enough to make it on national television, there is a kernel of truth at the bottom of the bucket of lies. If you want something you don't have, or don't have as much as you want (money, prestige, a fulfilling career, or whatever), you need to be resilient and keep looking for opportunities to grab. Most grabs will be failures, hence the resilience. If your goal is to stay safe, you'll keep doing what you're doing and nothing will change.
But the idea that thoughts, themselves, cause good things to happen? Horseshit designed to sell books, DVDs and tickets to motivational seminars. As Larry King pointed out, if all we need to do to cause good things to happen is think about them, where the hell do tyrants and starving people come from?
